The Huntington Beach Art Center (HBAC) is a community arts and cultural center serving Huntington Beach and the Southern California region. The Art Center opened its doors to the public in 1995 and presents the works of artists producing in all media. Through exhibitions, performances, film/video screenings, lectures, and educational programming, HBAC serves to advance public awareness and understanding of cultural, historic, and contemporary perspectives.

HBAC creates opportunities for local, regional, and national artists and the community to exhibit original artwork in public exhibitions. HBAC is a public/private partnership with the City of Huntington Beach and the Huntington Beach Art Center Foundation, a non-profit private corporation. The Art Center is operated through the City of Huntington Beach Community Services Department, Cultural Services Division.

The Huntington Beach Art Center makes regular calls for artists. Current updates are regularly posted online. Visit www.huntingtonbeachartcenter.org/exhibitions for more information, to download exhibition prospectuses with complete guidelines, and submit entries for exhibition.

2022 CALLS FOR ARTISTS

Centered on the Center 2022 presented by the Huntington Beach Art Center is an annual open call, non-juried exhibition on view January 29 – March 5, 2022.

Participation is open to 200 artists, 18 years or older. Artworks accepted must be original print, drawing or painting, sculpture, photography, or video installations completed in the last two years (2020-2022). The 2022 installment of Centered on the Center will be displayed in the HBAC galleries and presented in a virtual gallery on the Art Center website.

FEES $20 for one artwork, $30 for two artworks. Payment is due at the time of delivery. The Art Center accepts cash, credit card (Visa, MasterCard, and Discover) payments or checks payable to the City of Huntington Beach. Participation fees support HBAC exhibition programming excellence.

Online submission and delivery reservations open December 7, 2021 at 9am. The submission form will remain open until 200 artists have registered. The Art Center staff strongly encourages early registration to participate in the exhibition.

If The Shoe Fits… Judith Hendler Design Awards presented in partnership with the Huntington Beach Art Center is a juried entry exhibit on view May 7 – June 11, 2022.

Fashion jewelry designer, Judith Hendler, challenges enrolled Community College students in any of the visual art or crafts design departments and current HBAC members to define core sustainability concepts of reduce, reuse and repurpose within their own practices.

A SHOE IN Accepted submissions must use the concept of footwear, no matter how it is distorted or re-imagined. Inspiration may also be taken from the common references to shoes in everyday language.

The shape, form or idea of a shoe, boot, slipper, sandal or sneaker must be evident in the submission. An actual shoe or part of a shoe may be manipulated to create a new artwork. Heels, soles, leather and fabric, laces and straps are all fair game.

Award winners and honorable mentions will make the shoe motif or design central to the artwork in an unusual and interesting way. Where possible, recycled/repurposed/reused is greatly encouraged.

Deadline: Online submission portal closes April 1, 2022 at 5pm. Community College faculty sponsorship or HBAC membership required to participate.
