About the ArtistI’m Wanda Oliver, painter of vibrant, contemporary abstracts. My journey—from a life of quiet longing to one of creative freedom—infuses every mark and brushstroke I make. If I were a singer, I would sing hosannas, but I am a painter, so I must paint them. Each of my paintings is a lyrical invitation to live boldly, drinking deeply of the well of life. |
Wanda Oliver is a Texas-based painter whose bold, energetic abstractions pulse with color, movement, and a love of tactile surfaces. Raised on a farm in rural northeast Texas, Wanda’s early love of art was set aside for a career in software engineering, but her creative spirit never flagged. Wanda’s path to becoming an artist began with her first formal art class—a tile making course at Austin’s Laguna Gloria—where she discovered the expressive power of touch and texture. This early devotion to ceramics laid the groundwork for a lifelong fascination with materiality and mark-making.
A new chapter unfolded when Wanda’s curiosity led her from clay to the lens. Immersing herself in photography, she spent a decade honing her design sensibilities in the world of two-dimensional visual art. As a respected photography instructor, she exhibited in prestigious juried shows hosted by the Texas Photographic Society and others, earning recognition for her keen eye and teaching acumen.
The Covid lockdown of 2020 marked a pivotal shift: Wanda’s focus turned inward, from the field to the studio. She began weaving her photographic imagery into mixed media works—collages and artist books where painting, at first a supporting element, gradually claimed center stage. This transformation crystallized in the spring of 2025, when Wanda completed the Creative Visionary Program with Nicholas Wilton, deepening her commitment to painting as her primary medium. She has also studied with acclaimed artists including Sally Hirst, Pam Caughey, Louise Fletcher, and Jane Davis.
Wanda’s recent work is celebrated for its expressive color, movement, and emotional resonance. Her contemporary abstract expressionist paintings invite viewers to experience wonder, hope, and the joy of art that pierces the soul and celebrates life.
Wanda’s paintings are held in the collections of Patsi and Jeff Tindel, Mark Gonzales, and Bob & Judy Bitterli, as well as others who prefer to remain anonymous. In her first major exhibition as a painter, Wanda is included in the highly competitive juried show, Abstract National Exhibition, opening at Mark Arts, Wichita, KS on Jan. 9, 2026.
Wanda is represented by Xanadu Gallery and Saatchi Art.
