About the Artist

Contact: funk_bertrand@yahoo.fr

Michel Saja freely explored the art of painting after he attended art school, refusing to be limited by any specific style or influence.
He worked with different mediums including: ink, charcoal, water color, oil, acrylics, earth, and pigments. He is also influenced by architecture, faces, bodies and landscape.
He often takes his inspiration from his extensive travels and long journeys throughout different regions of the world. The discovery of the range and diversity of cultures, feelings and forms of expression lead him to explore different interpretations of reality as applied to his subjects.
Reality is often transposed into symbolism, becoming closer to dream visions that exist at the border of the subconscious. Now, his artistic path has become focused on light and darkness as polarities - from this antagonism movement and form are given life in his work.
Light and darkness, as the original principles, are creative forces. He expresses this through visionary landscapes that are plunged in abstract backgrounds as if they are emerging from the original chaos. The movement that results from the interaction of those primal energies becomes visible in colours that condense into shapes. Two other aspects that are omnipresent from the origin are chaos and organization. The conflict between these are the reason why natural or human shapes may arise in his paintings, seemingly from the apparent anarchy that surrounds them. As soon as light penetrates darkness, movement and energy arise.

PRESS RELEASE

Michel Saja’s exhibiting work eschews specific influences, while still demonstrating comfort with the techniques and styles of the great 19th century romantic painters. He uses his art as a means to show the passage of man through the natural world, and the unexpected beauty that arises as man and nature try to assert their own forms in the world over long periods of time.
Drawing inspiration from the centuries long transformation of the ancient Greek city, Aphrodisias, this latest collection examines the creative power of entropy, and the balancing order that humans impose.
His dedication and openness to art have taken him widely through the world, and left us with a fine body of work.
